This is quite an experience.
I’ve had similar experiences with return agents who just scan the tag before I explain to them what is going on, typically on the few occasions where I had a maintenance swap-out.
I’ve definitely experienced them slapping random license plates on cars that don’t match, but accidentally closing out the wrong contract / car is a new one. A couple months back in RDU I had an experience where they didn’t close my contract on return, and they put the car back on the aisle overnight. I went back in the morning and it was a similar clusterf-k to get it closed out, because that car had been “force” closed out at the gate when the person after me took it, but mine was still showing as open. Because a new contract was open, he couldn’t close mine without impacting that other one for the new person with the car. The manager was highly apologetic and very nice (Gave me $50 for the trouble) but It wasn’t until two days later that he emailed me a fixed invoice. Hope it works out and the manager did everything they needed to.
