I ended up going back that evening to reimburse the store. It's just the right thing to do. There is no need for anyone to lose their job over my silly little hobby.
I too had a case where they never charged my card. Once I realized I contacted the store and sure enough they were down $500. Sorted it out with them a couple of days later when I was back in the area. Manager and staff member were thankful to me
As others noted, it would be bad form to cause someone to lose their job.

Also the fact that they have your phone number means they might be able to trace it back to you, so again better to be upfront than waiting for them to contact you.

*I feel I even got good karma from my incident. A couple of months later a MO I had just bought at this WM, fell out of my pocket after I continued into the grocery section to get some fruit. Realized when I got to checkout. Cue frantic retracing of my steps through the store, looking for it. With no luck finding it, I went to the MC with low expectations, but happily someone had found the MO and handed it in. MO was blank so I was screwed if the finder decided to pocket it.
