This is a new one for me - agent checked out wrong car on rental agreement

Had a weird one this morning - stepped out of the shower in my hotel & found that I had received an email with a "thanks for renting with National" message and my rental receipt.

Except...I hadn't returned my car yet. And won't, until tomorrow.

I opened the attachment and it indicated that I had picked up the car at the Indianapolis airport on Monday the 17th, and returned it today in Austin, TX after putting 52 miles on it. Problem was, I still had the car (and was looking at it out of my window), and myself *and* the car were sitting in Louisville, KY.

I called customer service, and that went about as well as you might expect, but the agent told me that they would send a note to the manager at IND & that manager would call me back (hasn't happened). I rechecked the original emailed rental agreement against the new one, and the vehicle matched - black 2024 Hyundai Tucson. But then I noticed that the car that "I returned" had Texas plates and I am positive that my car has Georgia plates.

I started checking the vehicle details on the rental agreement against the key tag, and it looks like the agent that checked me out at IND has transposed two digits on the Vehicle Number. The rental agreement says I have a car ending in 8176, but my keychain says 8716.

I am going to give myself some extra time when I return tomorrow, because I have no idea how they are going to check the car in and (correctly) close out my rental. Plus, they added a little over $25 to the return. I was supposed to have 3 days @ $38/day, but they charged me 2 days at $69/day plus some taxes that seem to be specific to AUS airport.... Also, I am driving a car that I don't have a valid rental agreement for!

Good times!
