POST SCRIPT:
Within just a few seconds of midnight, the next date appeared on delta.com.
Two award seats were available on the partner airline and I snagged them.
Had I waited until I woke up this morning, they might no longer have been there.
So thank you for the advice!
Also, I was intrigued with your mentioning the loss of the round trip price by booking both legs separately.
I'm actually doing an open jaw, Orlando to one Asian city and returning from another.
Doing as two separate bookings, the price in Y was 141,700 skymiles. Had I booked as a round trip open jaw, 140,000 skymiles.
So not too bad of a penalty booking separate.
Thanks!
