I have never had a problem doing this until recently. In Dallas, the receptionist was downright rude, insisting that this was not a possibility. I asked her to call her supervisor who told her it was fine.

it happened again in Chicago, this time having to go through a process of getting permission

is this something others have experienced recently?
It's just due to lack of education by the employer of all the benefits AA has to offer. Don't ever expect employees to memorize everything, as I am pretty sure they have more pressing matters to memorize and learn rather than the minutiae of their own frequent flier programs/perks. You have to understand, FT and frequent fliers are a unique subset of the population, and we probably know more about the program than AA employees themselves. If you view it through this lens, you can actually educate AA staff you meet along the way, and everyone wins.

For example, the DFW FLL agents had no clue about the possibility of a redeemable Flagship Dinning Certificate under the current program, and was a completely new thing that she learned.
