I have done direct turn with other airlines - e.g. AS, DL, and they all credit two segments.
Late reply to this but mainline no, express yes, but I haven't found rhyme or reason. Mesa seems to be the most common case but that might just be exposure... E.g.UA6025 operates IAD-CLE-IAD tomorrow, as does UA6055 and UA6046
