BA charges surcharges on award flights that make them pretty worthless in most cases originating from anywhere but the UK. If you can find a partner flight somewhere you might find one without surcharges but in my experience you can't find them on BA's web site, you'll have to find availability using some other OW carrier web site and then call in. Beware that BA prices awards per segment and combining carriers increases the prices so connecting flights become quite expensive. For a long time AA flights within N.A. were amazing value on Avios but that's less true now -- I'm not sure to what degree though. If you happen to be in Europe and want shorthaul flights to/from London then a "Reward Saver" flight can be good value.
