Can companion board from another stop on route?

I'm hoping I might be able to use a Companion Pass to bring both of my kids home on the same train- the problem is they go to colleges on the same route but not the same city. My daughter catches the train in Seattle and my son from Olympia a few stops south of Seattle. Is the Companion Pass just like a regular ticket once it's purchased so that my daughter could get on show her ticket and then when my son gets on an Olympia show his ticket even though it would say he got on in Seattle? I understand that technically they're supposed to be traveling together for the entire trip but How likely is it we could swing this plan? Ticket prices are high this week and I would love to use the pass if I could.
Thanks!
