i guess summer months in ATH at the lower area (B16-B31) are not a good way to do these checks since many people from multiple flights mingle. Usually, they might invite people to gate-check their bag for free and they can come forward, otherwise, if people start forming queues and the gate agents are not exhausted might try wander in the queue.
