We were able to check in early around 1pm, went to lunch on the first day and didn't leave until 6pm the next day as you're free to get lunch on the day you leave and stay to use the facilities. The room itself was nice but just ok in my opinion considering the cash rate. We spent most of our time near the main pool and hot tub. We rarely saw people in the pool but the hot tub was a popular choice and we enjoyed the barrel sauna as well. The Japanese pools are nice at night as they feel secluded and when we went at 11pm nobody else was there. They are quite small though so I can see how it may feel cramped.
We loved eating on the patio at the Sur House at sunset. The weather was fantastic and we got a very nice clear, sunset. Food overall was good and exceeded my expectations as I had read some poor reviews going in. I enjoyed the fish/seafood dishes more than the steak which was a big tough. The desserts we had were great as well and I loved the berry and guava sorbets they had served with fruit. We did order late night room service as well (there is a $10 flat fee per delivery order) but our food came within 30 min and the seared striped bass and ribeye we got were surprisingly good for room service. For lunch, there's also a casual menu at the pool which is a good option if you're looking for a quick meal.
From 3-4pm there's also happy hour at Sur House and it includes a glass of their complimentary cocktail, the marine layer which was really good and can be made non-alcoholic as well.
For activities, there are a number of free guided hikes. We did the foraging hike (which is more of a walk around the property) and the redwood hike (~45 min easy to moderate hike). The redwood hike was the perfect easy hike for me and it ended at the Sur House for happy hour cocktails which was a great touch. My partner also did dive in the hive which he loved because he got to wear a bee suit and handle the hives.
Overall great stay and I would definitely come back ideally for 2 nights but even a 1 night stay is worth it if you're within driving distance or passing through Big Sur.
curious regarding your late departure. Do they provide luggage storage and access to your luggage? We have a spa reservation for a couples massage the last day that ends at 11:50. With checkout time being what it is and limited late checkout availability even as a globalist, my wife will want someplace to change and do her makeup, etc before we head out. We aren’t in a rush as we don’t have any plans until dinner that night in the Silicon Valley area. Just trying to figure out how to coordinate everything timing-wise.
