Anyways, what would have happened if we HAD missed it please? I presume we would have been rebooked on the next available flight at BAs expense? Would we also have got Denied Boarding compensation as well? Or overnight accommodation if appropriate?
I got the distinct feeling that the lateness of the Assistance wasn't that unusual.

It is unlikely that a passenger would be entitled to IDB compensation because you being late for departure is outside the airline’s control. It would depend on the full circumstances of the situation. UK/EU law places the obligation to provide assistance on the airport operators so responsibility for any failure in the provision of that service falls at the feet of the airport. Airlines are prevented by law from providing the service themselves.
When you miss a flight because of a failure of airport provided assistance, the airline is obligated to provide assistance - including overnight accommodation, subsistence and rebooking as soon as practicality possible.
