I was just part of a discussion on Chase forum where I was asking the same thing - whether changing to a less expensive flight if booked via Chas portal forfeits the difference, even when changing directly via UA (which apparently can be done). I was told that the you don’t receive the residual credit, as you would when booking direct. Granted I have never tried. UA is a bit different though, I think, since the loss of residual is written into the fare rules, and overridden by a policy allowing the residual as a credit when booked via UA.com. So am looking for data points as well. Kind of presume that if the residual is forfeited when booking via Chase, would be for travel booked on C1 as well. But YMMV, I guess.
Post 517 indicates it turns into a FFC so nothing is lost.
