Your typical front line Amex rep isn't going to have a clue about this.
ANY charge from a qualifying property will trigger the credit. Room rate, incidentals, they all count the same, all that matters is that a qualifying property charge your card.
All of this is covered in the wiki, for properties within the US advance purchase rates do not trigger the credit (since the charge doesn't come from the property themselves) but for everywhere else it does, in spite of what the terms say.
