I wish the eGift cards worked at the pump. I've tried tapping at the pump with a fully loaded gift card and I still get an error message. I buy gas every other month, if that, so it's not a frequent thing. I buy electronic gift cards with the barcodes on costco.com and ask customer service to load it to a plastic card for use at the pump. Most of their customer service people know how to do it, but occasionally it takes longer if someone is unfamiliar with the process.
