I have a lifetime senator status and, unfortunately, lots of miles. Their fees have bring going up for years. As they claim it is outside of their control and the actually mileage tickets are still free. This spring I was checking on a business ticket from the West Coast to Frankfurt. The 120.000 miles is a good deal. However, "Taxes & Fees" amounted to $2.300!!! I am happy to pay a fee, beyond the taxes, but there are limits.
I take this as an insult to my long loyalty. I booked, for a little, more Condor business which has much nicer seats, very friendly staff and a service level that is at least on par.
If I had to start over I would not join, nor recommend to join M&M. If I had to fly Star alliance and Lufthansa I would collect my miles with another member airline
You have been caught in the crossfire. Most miles in the US come from credit cards, not “frequent and loyal” customers. Many European airlines deal with this issue one way or another.
