I fly once or twice a week on different airlines and I drive all over the country 10000+ miles a month. I status matched to Gold last year. All my flights are booked as one ways within a few days of departure or even on the same day. On the legacy airlines I book multiple flights in one day just so I have flexibility on when to leave, and I cancel the flights I don’t take. My travel plans change on a whim to accommodate other people in many different states. I don’t fly Spirit much because of the cancellation policy (but I might change with the new cancellation policy).
I would rather fly 8 one-ways since almost all my flights aren’t out and back round trips. I might fly somewhere else or fly to where my car is and drive somewhere else.
So instead I’ll waste a day flying LAS-RNO twice and LAS-BUR and LAS-LAX spending under $200. I’d much rather fly LAS-DFW, DFW-MSY, MSY-PHL, PHL-TPA, TPA-DFW, DFW-LAS or something like that which actually aligns with where I need to go in a week. And I’d spend more than $200 on those one way last minute flights.
2 weeks ago I ended up driving that route instead of flying it.
