A few answers: Milano Cadorna is about 2 miles from Milano Centrale, about a 45 minute walk or a 15 minutes (plus or minus) cab ride. There is also a subway that takes around the same time (linea 2).
Second, there are trains from Centrale to MXP every half hour that take about 15 minutes more than from Cadorna. There are also buses every 15 minutes or so from Centrale that take about an hour, but traffic can be difficult at times.

If you want a Marriott (don't forget the Gallia, right next to the Centrale station, and for me nicer than the Westin or Diana), it is easy to stay there and take the train or bus from Centrale to MXP and also get to the city center by subway or by foot.
I have stayed at all three (though in recent years only at the Gallia) and they all have pluses and minuses. There are more recent reviews in the Marriott forum.
thank you! so it is still ok time-wise to take the train from Centrale to MXP? I would not take a car/taxi b/c traffic.

I will check for the Gallia. That did not come up on the marriott website, maybe they are sold out for my night.
