If I want to use American miles to upgrade a BA flight, booked through American I think Expert Flyer is showing C class upgrades available Boston to Heathrow 9/24. You cannot upgrade on a BA operated flight on a discounted ticket using miles unless you have a full fare ticket - you would be able to purchase a discount business class ticket for a lower price than a BA 'W' fare.
If you were going to buy a 'W' Premium Economy fare, then you would need U class to be able to upgrade to business class
You cannot upgrade a transatlantic BA flight from economy to business - you can only upgrade to Premium Economy
These are really moot for anyone planning a leisure trip since I doubt very much that you would be buying such a fare
