The choice of route depends of the prevailing winds at a given time. The stronger the winds, the more it makes sense to have a different route for the inbound/outbound.
Flights to Asia are already pushing some planes enveloppe to their limit. Add strong headwinds, and the "catching a more favorable way back" matter can quickly turn into a "being able to fly at all" issue.
