My wife and I were coming back from Lima to madrid on Thursday. We are both currently silver with ba. But tend to rotate from gold and back to silver. I was sitting in 2a and my partner (non spanish speaker) sitting in 4a. I speak fluent spanish. Now having flown regularly with iberia i tend to expect the flight to depart from madrid to offer significant better service and food going out than on the segment back. Usually in the return it’s couple drinks, try to eat the food watch movie and sleep.

on this occasion, she came to me during the first course service as to how i got the entrée. Apparently, she was just pointed to water or soft drinks and nothing else. Upon selecting water they moved on. Upon hearing this i immediately contacted one of the crew to find out what happened.. and then they gave her an entree. The rest of the flight, every-time my parter asked something she was answered back in spanish and moved on.

this means she basically got no service whatsoever during the entire night flight. Just in the morning was offered tea and croissant as she was sleeping when service went past.

i on the other hand got what i was asking for if i wanted a full breakfast afterwards as i was getting changed the toilet.

what the hell is going on here?????

none of the crew in J speak english, all decided to just ignore any English speakers. I have never seen a crew in J or F on any airline flown that couldn’t speak english.

i would’ expect to speak Arabic on qatar to get service?

is this a new type of racism from iberia against english speakers. I am deeply upset by this and concerned.

how would any of you approach this? Complain With ba? With iberia (don’t expect this to go anywhere)?

i look forward to any advice you might have.

cheers,

chris
I'm no social scientist but I think if by IB cabin crew only speaking Spanish, then it would be "xenophobia" and not "racism towards the English speakers" (who are more than one race), but anyways.

Nice that you speak Spanish, so what did they say when you asked them why your partner didn't get her entre? I'm assuming it's due to the language issue.
Assuming then the crew told you none of them spoke any English, it would have been up to you at that point to play waiter/translator for your partner for the rest of the flight.
Then on arrival you can send in a complaint to IB, how many avios would have compensated you for having to play waiter/translator/nice-husband.

Since that didn't happen, I guess the complaint should come from partner and not you, stating crew didn't understand English and so she didn't receive the xxyy F&B requests.

FWIW my partner also doesn't speak Spanish, sometimes I play nice, sometimes I don't to show him what he's missing out....

Edit: I see why you did 2A/4A, but if the problem is "systemic" and you don't want wife to go hungry, next time go for seats closer together?
