I'm looking at upgrading my parents with miles from Y or PE to J on their flight to Asia. Their final destination can be reached with most of the codeshares with NH, SQ, BR, CX, etc, and anything out of SFO or LAX should work. I don't see any upgrade fare class available currently, so which routes generally have a good shot at getting off the upgrade waitlist? I've heard LAX-HKG has a good chance?
UA is not opening advance upgrade space the way they have in the past. However, from what I’ve observed, and keeping in mind that these are trends and not guarantees, SFO-PEK and SFO-TPE seem to have more space than most flights. LAX-HKG, yes, although there’s less capacity on that route. SFO-MNL might be the easiest upgrade in the system, although they still don’t offer advance space… but I’d have a hard time recommending that anyone transit MNL.
