Going abit OMNI, but to answer your question:

It is based on pride, which certain cultures instill more than others, and is not dependent on money/monetary payment.

If you are not proud of the work you do, regardless of payment, it shows....doesn't matter what industry you are in.....

In my industry, pride is probably the most important attribute to select future workers. People must be proud of the work they produce when no one is watching or when the situation becomes tough; they need to give 100% effort regardless of pay or time spent on that work. When we teach future workers, this is the most important trait we instill into our future colleagues.
