HND-IAD one way on Delta: 1hr 20min layover in Detroit or Atlanta?
One-way, July 1st

Google flights shows 2 choices for layovers (same price $1229):
DTW- 15hr total time
ATL- 16hr 20min total time

I'm thinking DTW is better because it's quicker but i've never been to either airport.
1) Which is the better choice?
2) And will 1hr 20min be enough time for customs? (I'm a USA citizen with USA passport)

I only have carry-on.
I do not have status on any airline

Edit:
Flights.Google.com (of all places) gave me a cheaper alternative.
Hnd-mdt with layover at dtw for $400. I arrive at dtw at 235pm.
​​​​​Mdt-iaf nonstop on united at 745pm for $200.
Sound good? Any downsides/catches?
