A seasoned 1K flyer who -- with a short connection to a likely overbooked flight -- went to the lounge to verify his flight assignment instead of the gate. Two things can be right at the same time: United could well have (probably did) violate their own procedures and IDB him AND he made poor choices if he really wanted to get on that flight.
