Btw, to others' question around the myth of ***, it was really simple as confirmed but agent (other than GAs) unable to access the map. I pulled up EF and saw there were two unoccupied seats in J when I was confirmed - attempted to select the seats but failed. After I was offloaded, one more passenger was upgraded.
Based on my prior experience of double bookings on AA, there was never an issue. In the good ole AA hubs, some agent even printed out my new BPs and handed them over with a smile, "I got you covered." The whole point of protection is that you are confirmed in the same cabin on the other flight. There is no risk of being downgraded, to the best of my knowledge - esp. as airlines do not usually oversell the front cabin (i.e. J on a J/Y config, or F on a F/J/Y config).
J is indeed oversold on UA and other carriers.
