You did not mention when you want to do this. July and August are very busy throughout the Highlands and are best avoided. If it is after that then I would second the Inverness suggestion. Alternatively drive up to Fort William from Glasgow - it is a stunning drive though distillery free until Fort William. From there you can go just about anywhere.
