Obviously you'd normally have to pay the excess - assuming your policy has one - out of your own pocket. Interested in your comment about Amex as I was in a vaguely similar situation a few months back - CW journey abandoned due to family emergency. I just assumed the excess wasn't recoverable!

BA put a note on the system I was not able to travel, will post me a letter, and will have a medical certificate with me. Will post on the issue of the excess. Can't be bothered to read AMEX TCs but I thought that it starts where the personal insurance stops and it would seem to me the excess would fall into there. Might well be wrong.
Shame for the CE miles. Oh well I guess health is more important.
