Hoping to give myself more sleeping time at the hotel in ATL than the 6 hours I'd probably currently get.

And a second question...if I get upgraded on the NY-ATL flight does that make it easier/harder to SDC? Would I just be looking for last F seat availability on an earlier flight?

So the fact that you have an overnight in ATL sounds like you have an international final destination (domestic flights only allow 4hr layover, or 6hr for Alaska or Hawaii). SDC is not allowed for international itineraries, so your answer to that is no.

ANd the answer to your second question, even though irrelevant with my answer to the first, would be that complimentary upgrades don't apply to SDC rules, and its your original cabin rules that apply. You lose your upgrade if you SDC, and have to re-qualify on the new flight if you were in main cabin to start.
