uses for outside pockets on rollaboards

I'm getting closer to needing to replace my beloved 2-wheel Kirkland rollaboard, and the options I'm looking at all seem to feature lots of outside pockets. I don't see how these are useful, and I was hoping to hear from the community what uses they've found for them. To me, they just seem like things to get stuck on bins (or other items in the bins). Manufacturers and reviewers talk about putting items like keys, sunglasses, and cables in smaller pockets, but to me, those belong in a laptop bag. Some bags have large padded pockets, and they're intended for laptops and tablets, but those items seem too delicate to have on the outside of a bag getting crammed into a bin. And the back pocket is perhaps most perplexing...what goes in there? Obviously much of this is personal preference, but I was hoping to hear some clever tricks (or even general thoughts on the topic).
