Am I correct in thinking there's no benefit/penalty to not using the toll pass?

My read is it automatically enrolls you if you don't get it & pays your tolls + $5/day for the convenience of it & in return you presumably zip through the EZ pass lanes and it does the license plate recognition thing?

Have a rental from DC to Jersey Shore via a 1 night stop in Philly so trying to plan accordingly.
