It's because the cancellation is a few days away, and you are on a redemption ticket. Given the same-day LHR alternative they are within their rights to do this, unfortunately.. Had it been a cncellation on the day, and you were in LCY at the time, I've no doubt that alternative routes would have been accommodated.
Ah okay, so that's likely to be my only option then? If I cancel for a refund I take it that I won't get my return flight (booked separately on a cash ticket from a different airport) refunded either? So either take the poor option (is UK261 an option due to the earlier flight time) or cancel and go through travel insurance.
