Any connection over 24 hours counts as stopover and you need to pick up your luggage and re-check before your next flight. Luggage pick-up area is after passport control so you may also need a visa depending on your passport.

Istanbul Airport has multiple paid luggage lockers, which you can utilize if you don't want to carry your luggage around the city.
