Am I correct to tell him he will receive a full value travel credit for the fares, but will receive no credit or refund for the upgrade?
This may get tricky, there is no FFC for CASH upgrades BUT filing the proper paper work I suspect a refund will be possible

As far as the paid fare a FFC is an option with the potential of a refund if travel is not possible with in 1 year of original purchase. See the wiki of the new thread for details
