Yes quite right and from your questions you are obviously aware there can be other factors that may come into play (departing airport, cabin class). All I would add is that my rusk sack never looks 'bulging'. Having said that I cannot remember a time when checkin staff even took note of my carry on.
Mine backpack is of a normal size and the small one is really tiny, like a woman's purse.
