Visiting Le Meridien Maldives in December and curious as to any opportunities that exist for sandbar excursions (I understand they have a private island/sandbar). Is it accessible only through the hotel’s excursion or can it be accessed by kayak or catamaran?
Also, for snorkeling, do you need to participate in the hotel excursions or is the reef easily accessible on your own?

As pointed out above, you can get the snorkeling gear for free at the dive center. The house reef was in decent enough shape 2 years ago when we visited, so I’d expect it to get better with time. You can ask at the Dive Center for the directions to the reef, it’s not that far, and we saw plenty of sharks, turtles and various fish and corals. You can definitely access it on your own. There are floatation vests in the room if you don’t feel comfortable swimming out with just the fins.
