Just tried with a JFK-LHR r.t and outbound business / inbound PE came in at $2488 , so seems that AA isn't working against such fares - might just be the specific route or dates. Did you try other booking channels - e.g. phone reservations or try booking via travel agent ?

If UA has a better schedule, then makes sense to stick with that than try and see if it was a website issue
