Huh, indeed, that's new to me.
HNL-IAH requires the -FKN fare series to route lie-flat equipment overwater and is published at a $300 differential to the -FFN series on recliner equipment (coded by exhaustive list of specific aircraft type). I see the same on HNL-SFO with a $100 differential.
That's disappointing, because a lie-flat as far as DEN is more or less a requirement if you're flying east to a destination other than the West Coast. But I guess they're just matching DL in trying to surcharge lie-flat equipment. It's interesting from a business perspective because of how cheap West Coast to Hawaii has been historically, so there's already a massive premium for the longer flights. Often the cheapest solution from further CONUS point is to take a fare break in SFO or LAX, which I am much happier to do westbound (almost always end up connecting in SFO/LAX that way for price reasons).
