It was a number of years ago now, but I was in this situation when I first reached silver, it was a flight from Newcastle to Heathrow which picked up the necessary points. I had an onward flight, tried asking at the north lounge and they said no. Flight was leaving from B gates so tried again at the B lounge and they said yes. Moral of the story, nothing to lose by asking nicely.
