I tried the paid Japanese meal on Haneda Sydney here in May. As other special meals it is confirmed before take off and served initially in the service flow. I found the meal quite nice, and worth doing from time to time. But probably not going to do it every time.
The second meal is still just the standard breakfast. Which was pretty decent still
For the return flight Sydney Haneda, the standard meals. The choice was a chicken soboro-don or a shrimp pasta. This is the shrimp pasta, and apart from needing a bit of extra salt it was nice enough. The rock salt caramel ice cream was very good, if it is a flavour that appeals to you.
Prelanding was chicken noodles. Nothing to complain about here, very good flavour.
