If you book an award flight in Y and J becomes available then you technically don't pay the difference for an upgrade; your ticket is reissued. If this is just one segment (e.g. DOH-YUL) then it's easy; if the itin involves more flights then availability is required throughout because the entire itin gets re-ticketed.
