Just because a flight is wide open doesn't mean there will be availability in your original fare class. If you have a revenue fare, you can check flights for original class inventory on EF. EF doesn't show award class availability, but availability in award classes generally correlates pretty highly with revenue classes (so if there is availability in V bucket, chances are pretty good there will also be availability in NV). Looking at fares available for booking on delta.com won't show availability in lower fare classes due to advance purchase requirements on cheaper fares.
