Needless to say, the carveout in the last sentence can be brought up by the hotel, however the burden of proof that this is the case lies on them.
The IHG CC seem utterly clueless they either say the property is fully booked (Duh!) or transfer me to the property who say they are fully booked. There is no acknowledgement of the reservation guarantee at all even though it is more than 1000 hours out not 72.
At no point has any T&C weasling been attempted. It would have been more subtle to ask for £1000 for a basic room.
