As someone who routinely needs WiFi to get work done over tpac flights, this is unambiguously negative. Even on DL metal equipped with Ka-band satellite, Internet became unusable for me once free WiFi rolled out.
Inflight internet is never ‘free’: it’s a constant pool resource.
Unless CX is upgrading bandwidth (which I doubt they are) or throttling the free tier, they’re offering a glorified messaging pass either for free or at $20 (for W/Y passengers).
