I strongly prefer NH's current approach to short late night flights to the US west coast and southeast Asia. No matter how quiet or un-elaborate a meal service is, it is still a disturbance to sleeping pax, be it in the form of slight noise, food smell, or overhead lights. J is all about maximizing rest and productivity, and there is still enough food to make a properly sized meal so nobody should go hungry.
That said, I do think that NH could do a better job advertising this limited service when booking, so that those unlike me know in advance and can plan accordingly. But maybe they just don't see the lack of a proper meal as a big deal.
