Some IHG certificates used to be able to be applied to bookings in the future as long as they were applied before the expiration date. That was like 10 years ago though. I remember doing this once, but trying again 2 years later and the system wouldn't allow it anymore. Definitely don't remember this with a Marriott cert though.
Now that you mention it, I also remmebr IHG previously permitting certifcate usage as long as it was booked before the expiration date. I don't remember when they discontinued it. IIRC there were lots of FT posts at the time about what happens if you book a future stay past the expiration date of a certificate and then wind up having to cancel it.
