Now that you mention it, I also remmebr IHG previously permitting certifcate usage as long as it was booked before the expiration date. I don't remember when they discontinued it. IIRC there were lots of FT posts at the time about what happens if you book a future stay past the expiration date of a certificate and then wind up having to cancel it.
