Not trying to sound unsympathetic, but a 3-4 hour delay is not a huge deal honestly, especially if it didn’t cause a misconnection. Sure it’s inconvenient to everyone’s travel plans, and arriving ultra late at night when ground transportation options are limited and if you have limited mobility, even more so. But at the end of the day I think 5K is fairly reasonable, maybe 10K at most. Just my opinion as not only a frequent leisure flyer, but also an airline pilot who sees tons of delays and all of the myriads of things that must “go right” for a flight to actually takeoff. Agree 100%.
I don't ask for compensation unless I got stuck overnight and have to go to a hotel. That has happened to me three times with Delta, and one time with American but that case with American was really Delta's fault as I was rebooked onto American during the Atlanta power meltdown a few years back.
And I think I have gotten around $150-$200 from Delta for those, so 5000 sky miles is pretty decent IMO.
FWIW American coughed up a $500 voucher for that without being asked.
