In general miles-purchased flights cannot be upgraded – instead you simply cancel one award booking and make a new award booking.

Also, whereas BA uses the same inventory for awards and for upgrades, AA doesn't and so even if you see upgrades available on AA, it wouldn't mean you could make a new award booking.

Given that, your 'upgrade' path is simply to cancel one booking and make a new one – what matters most to you is the cost of cancelling and the timescale for the reinstatement of your Avios. That depends upon the rules of the AVIOS program you are a member of.
