Agree. I've booked an overnight at PDL on my way back from Santa Maria Island this summer. There are 5 in my family so didn't relish having to buy that many one ways back on an alternative airline after a missed connection to BA's weekly service..
Full fare refundable return tickets on SATA on this route, at least, are only £96 so it is inexpensive and thus worth considering adding on another island if you have the time. To reach other islands from Sao Miguel (PDL) you really have to fly.
