In the way of Tokyo- look up, look down, route to the side street. I tend to go to the underground walkways at least a few blocks past Chuo Dori unless I'm reverse foot traffic at rush hour or station construction has too many choke points. There's areas of Tokyo where you can keep to more overhead pedestrian pass ways, too.
