If you book the ticket via the US website then I believe (though not 100% certain) that you'll receive a trip credit back good for anywhere, not just ex-Germany. I have run into the country of origin stuff before too buying lots of tickets ex-EU however when AA switched to trip credits most of this has gone away, at least IME.

Also I would forget about booking a oneway, you can buy a roundtrip MUC-LAX via the US website for basically the same price. Put the return flights way off in the future when you might be able to use them, or hope for a major schedule change then cancel for a refund.
